Bodily Injury coverage provides compensation to those injured in an accident, when the accident is the fault of the policy holder. So if you injure another driver (or even your own passenger), the injured party can bring a claim against you. In that event, your insurance company would step in to handle the claim for you. However, your insurance company will only protect you up to the limits of your BI coverage.
Different policies carry different amounts, and it is up to the person purchasing the coverage to decide how they want to be protected (although an at-fault driver may be insured, he or she can be personally liable should the injuries exceed the policy limits). Unfortunately, Florida law does not require drivers to carry Bodily Injury coverage, so many policies carry no BI coverage.
